Vision Boarding

Kicking of the new year, whether with your goals or resolutions or the likes, it helps to get clear on where your focus is and where you want to go.

Putting your goals down on paper makes you more likely to achieve them, and a visual format can help. We talk frequently about the practice of visualization, especially as it applies to game preparation for athletic performance. Creating a vision board can help you put your goals down on paper in a visual format that helps you get clear focus and direction on your future state.

Let's get started!

  1. Take a few moments to reflect on what is important to you. Decide on a timeline of where you will be visualizing the future for your board. For example, will you be mapping out your future best self in one year or five years? Be specific, and get very clear on what you want to accomplish in this timeframe.

  2. Prepare your materials. Whether you are using magazines, images found online, or personal photos for inspiration, it is important to find visual representation for your goals. For example, are you trying to reach the next level in your athletic career? Include a photo of a benchmark for that team or club. Are you envisioning a new car? Include that as well. Incorporate specific and relevant images to the goals you chose, along with any key words or phrases to reinforce your messaging.

  3. After you have assembled the visual layout of your goals for the timeframe you chose, put your vision board up in a place you will see it regularly. Keeping the vision board in a frequent line of sight will help you remember where you are going and what you are working towards.

  4. Feel free to make changes if you find a goal is no longer relevant. It is helpful to revisit your vision board every year or two to ensure you are accomplishing the goals you set out for, set a new path forward, and refresh to remove any items you no longer find on your roadmap.

Though I keep my vision board created last year hanging for constant reminder, I did intentionally revision each detail on my vision board recently. It was encouraging to find some items come to fruition, while many others still very relevant and important to the future life I want for myself.
