Sports & COVID-19
With the current pandemic of COVID-19, sports have been cancelled at all levels and we are social distancing to help flatten the curve. For families and fans, the lack of sports can leave a void in their daily lives and routines. Many leagues have been sharing replays of past games on television and social media, allowing fans to relive great moments and think about those experiences and positive feelings from that time while also helping to fill the void. While social distancing, you can also try learning a new hobby or activity and spending some time outdoors.
The AASP recently shared some tips to help with the sports community during this pandemic. You can read the full story here. Some key takeaways include reminding us that we are all in this experience together, and it is important to take inventory of your emotional state as it will ebb and flow. Consider your basic physiological needs (Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs), and reach out for help when you need it. Community really shows up in a crisis, and resources are available.
Stay connected and in community, even though it is virtual during social distancing. Keep tabs on the ever changing information and news, and keep moving your body to manage your stress and mental wellness.Stay aware of your mental health and well being. Now more than ever talk about what you are feeling, reducing the stigma of these conversations. For those who work directly with sports, whether as athletes or others, remember why you chose to do this work. Keep your routine, and stay mentally and physically fit.
Finally, this is a crisis situation we would not choose to be in if given the chance. Yet we are in this situation all together. Let's come through this stronger together.
